Morcom’s Phillip Island Fight Back                                                                   17-6-2008

After a break of some three months, Barry Morcom returned to the racing at Phillip Island Raceway in Victoria last weekend and he managed a strong fight back during the second round Australian Production Car Championship.

Driving his Rondo Building Services supported and Eastern Creek International Kart Raceway prepared BMW 335i Turbo, Morcom managed to overcome a DNF in the opening race to finish the second and final race to the weekend in a strong third place outright.

A new race format to the Australian Production Car Championship sees practice and qualifying followed by two 60 minutes mini endurance races and it proved to be a popular and exciting format amongst both the fans and drivers alike.

Morcom qualified fifth outright and therefore started the opening 60 minute race from grid position five and his run was spoiled after a clash with an overzealous competitor in the opening laps and this therefore damaged the oil cooler and in the wet conditions it made driving a bit difficult as oil was dripping onto the front wheel. When Morcom made his pit stop at the half way mark race officials deemed his car too dangerous to drive and he was therefore unable to continue.

Starting from the back of the grid for the second race, Morcom had it all to gain and nothing to lose. In what was a hard charging drive, Morcom managed to work his way into third place at the completion of the 60 minute race.

“It was all looking good for a podium finish for the round had we not encountered the dramas in the opening race, as we certainly had the speed to be a podium runner as our race two results showed,” Morcom explained.

“I had made a good start in the opening race and in the Second corner I was just hit from another competitor and that broke my oil cooler in the rain I didn’t notice the affects of the oil on my front tyre as conditions were very slippery out there any way.

“When I arrived for my pit stop I was told by race officials that I wasn’t allowed to continue due to the excess oil spraying on the front tyres, so as disappointing as it was I just had to bear it, but I was happy with my fight back to end up on the podium in the second race.”

The third round of the Australian Production Car Championship is to be fought out at Oran Park Raceway (Narellan, NSW) on August 30 – 31.

Morcom Motorsport is proudly supported in 2008 by the following organisations: Rondo Building Services, C.I.S. Group, P & I Smash Repairs, Haltech, Premier One, NSW Stretch Ceilings, and Hi-Tech Computers.
