Fourth Place Again for Morcom Motorsport in Bathurst 12 Hour                 12-2-2008

For the second year running, the Morcom Motorsport team, headed by Barry Morcom and joined by co-drivers Steve Owen and Layton Crambrook, has finished fourth outright and second in their class, during the running of the Bathurst 12 Hour last weekend at Mount Panorama in Bathurst NSW.

There was no question about it; the Morcom Motorsport team were in contention for the outright Bathurst 12 Hour victory, had they not firstly encountered an electrical issue with their Rondo Building Services supported BMW 335i Turbo during the middle stages of the event, and then in the latter stages they fought with a rear brake issue.

“We held down the lead on three occasions over the first half of the race, and were looking good for a win, if not a podium finish, but we came up short on both accounts,” explained Morcom Motorsport lead driver, Barry Morcom.

“Despite our electrical issue and the rear brake problem we faced, the car ran faultlessly all weekend, and my two co-drivers Steve [Owen] and Layton [Crambrook] performed very well, it was just a shame that we didn’t finish higher up in the field as we were more than capable of a better result.”

After starting the Bathurst 12 Hour from seventh on the grid after qualifying in that position it didn’t take the Morcom Motorsport team long to charge their way towards the front of the field.

“Our strategy was working a treat and we manage to get ourselves to the pointy end of the field without much of a hassle,” Morcom commented.

“Earlier in the weekend we had an electrical problem and we thought we had fixed the drama only for it to resurface during the race. At that time we were at the front of the field and we lost a lap in the pits as a result of the electrical problem, and from there we were chasing our tails and simply couldn’t recover.”

Although fourth outright and second in class is by no means a bad result, the efforts of the preparation, thanks to the Eastern Creek Karts Raceway team, and the pace of their BMW 335i, should have resulted in a better Bathurst 12 Hour result for the Morcom Motorsport team.

Morcom Motorsport is proudly supported in 2008 by the following organisations: Rondo Building Services, C.I.S. Group, P & I Smash Repairs, Yokohama, Hydrolyte, Premier One, NSW Stretch Ceilings, and Hi-Tech Computers.
